Overview
The order is not the finish line
For a course business, a WooCommerce order is only useful if it produces the right access: one enrollment, in the right course, for the right person, removed again when the order is refunded or the subscription lapses. The critical journey runs from catalog to course details, checkout, payment confirmation, LMS enrollment and finally training access, and each step can fail independently.
We build the commerce layer so that path is deterministic and auditable, whether the LMS runs inside WordPress or as a separate platform.
01
Two very different integration models
LearnDash and Tutor LMS run inside WordPress. Access is granted by the LMS plugin itself when a linked WooCommerce product is purchased, so the work is configuring product-to-course links, access rules and expiry correctly, and testing that plugin updates do not change that behavior.
Canvas, Moodle and TalentLMS are separate systems. The WooCommerce order has to trigger an API call to another server, which introduces network failures, user matching and retries. These need a queued, idempotent integration and a reconciliation job. Automatic enrollment is possible only where the LMS exposes the necessary API on your plan.
02
Mapping products to courses
We store the LMS course identifier on each product or variation, and expand bundles into their component courses at enrollment time. Corporate seat purchases create a group or cohort and issue enrollment codes instead of enrolling the buyer. Coupons and price changes stay on the WooCommerce side and never affect what gets enrolled.
- Single course: one product, one LMS course ID
- Bundle: one product, several course IDs expanded per order line
- Seats: quantity creates a group with that many enrollment slots
- Subscription: access tied to subscription status, not the first order
03
Subscriptions, renewals, refunds and cancellations
Access granted by a subscription should follow the subscription, not the order that started it. With WooCommerce Subscriptions we listen for status changes and suspend or restore LMS access accordingly, keeping the learner's history intact so a renewal does not restart their progress.
Refunds are handled the same way: a full refund removes or suspends the enrollment, a partial refund on a bundle removes only the refunded course, and every change is logged against the order for finance.
php
add_action( 'woocommerce_subscription_status_updated', function ( $subscription, $new_status, $old_status ) { $args = array( $subscription->get_id(), $new_status ); if ( in_array( $new_status, array( 'on-hold', 'cancelled', 'expired' ), true ) ) { as_enqueue_async_action( 'zs_lms_suspend_access', $args, 'lms-sync' ); } elseif ( 'active' === $new_status && 'active' !== $old_status ) { as_enqueue_async_action( 'zs_lms_restore_access', $args, 'lms-sync' ); } }, 10, 3 );
Follow the subscription's status when granting or suspending LMS access (WooCommerce Subscriptions).
04
Reconciliation, gateways and email
Payment gateways differ in when they mark an order paid. Some complete instantly, others leave orders in processing until a callback arrives. We trigger enrollment on the status that reliably means paid for your gateway and product type, then run a nightly job that lists any paid order without a matching enrollment and any enrollment without a valid order.
Transactional email is rewritten so the confirmation a learner receives includes a working course link only once enrollment has succeeded, rather than promising access that may not exist yet.

FAQ
WooCommerce Questions
Something we haven't covered? The assistant answers from this page and can book an engineer.
Ask the assistant
Can one WooCommerce product enroll a learner in several courses?
Yes. A bundle product stores several course IDs and the enrollment job creates each enrollment, tracking them individually so a partial refund can remove one.
Can a company buy seats for its employees?
Yes. A seat purchase creates a group or cohort in the LMS and gives the buyer a way to assign learners, rather than enrolling the buyer personally.
What happens to access when a subscription payment fails?
When WooCommerce Subscriptions moves the subscription on hold, a queued job suspends access. A successful retry reactivates it with progress intact.
We use LearnDash. Do we still need an integration?
Usually not an API integration, because LearnDash runs inside WordPress. The work is configuring and testing its WooCommerce access rules, expiry and group purchases.
Can you clean up orders that never produced an enrollment?
Yes. A reconciliation run lists paid orders with no matching enrollment, and after you review the list we backfill the missing access.

Hi — I can help with WooCommerce LMS Development. What's happening between your WordPress site and your LMS?
Orders complete in WooCommerce, but some learners never get enrolled.
That's usually the order-to-enrollment hand-off — a missed webhook or a duplicate account. Let's book a technical assessment; I'll need your name and work email.
