Overview
Canvas is built for institutions, and its API reflects that
Universities, continuing-education units and some training providers run Canvas for delivery and WordPress for the public catalog, admissions or registration. Canvas is a separate hosted system with a detailed REST API, SIS import tooling and strong LTI support, but it expects you to think in accounts, sub-accounts, terms, sections and SIS IDs.
Canvas is a platform where ZionStar has production experience, including admissions tooling, LTI applications and environment administration. We also offer focused services on Canvas integrations and customization.
01
Provisioning users and enrollments
WordPress can create Canvas users with POST /api/v1/accounts/:account_id/users and enroll them with POST /api/v1/courses/:course_id/enrollments. The detail that matters is the SIS ID. If every user and course carries an SIS ID set from your system of record, WordPress can address them as sis_user_id:value and sis_course_id:value without storing Canvas's internal IDs, and duplicate records are much easier to prevent.
For a few enrollments per order, direct API calls from a queued job are right. For term-start loads of thousands, we generate SIS import CSVs and post them to the SIS imports endpoint, which Canvas processes in bulk and reports on.
http
POST /api/v1/courses/sis_course_id:CPD-ETHICS-2026/enrollments Authorization: Bearer <scoped developer key token> Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded enrollment[user_id]=sis_user_id:WP-10482 &enrollment[type]=StudentEnrollment &enrollment[enrollment_state]=active &enrollment[notify]=false
Enroll a learner by SIS IDs so WordPress never needs Canvas's internal IDs.
02
Authentication and SSO
Canvas supports several authentication providers, including SAML, OpenID Connect and CAS. Institutions usually already have one. The WordPress side should join that identity provider rather than invent a second login, so a learner who registers on the website signs into Canvas with the same credentials.
When the website and Canvas sit on different domains, we test the full sign-in and deep-link path, because a working SSO with a broken return URL still sends learners to the Canvas dashboard instead of their course.
03
LTI 1.3 for tools inside Canvas
Some functions belong inside Canvas rather than on the website: an application form, a resource library or a purchase upgrade inside a course. LTI 1.3 lets a tool hosted alongside your WordPress stack launch inside Canvas with a signed identity, without a second login. Our Axon Education work included a standalone LTI application for the admissions lifecycle.
04
Developer keys, scopes and rate limits
Integration calls should use a developer key with only the API scopes they need, issued by your Canvas administrator, not a personal token belonging to a staff member who might leave. Canvas applies request throttling, so bulk jobs read the rate-limit headers and slow down before they are cut off.
Scope
Canvas Integration Scope
Supported through standard Canvas features
- User creation and enrollment through the Canvas REST API
- Addressing users and courses by SIS ID
- Bulk loads through SIS imports
- SSO through the institution's existing authentication provider
- LTI 1.3 tools launched from Canvas courses
Confirmed with your Canvas administrator
- Developer key issuance and permitted API scopes
- Account and sub-account permissions for the integration user
- Whether an existing SIS integration already owns enrollments
- Use of Canvas Data or Live Events for reporting
How it works
Canvas Integration Steps
Institutions have governance steps; we plan around them.
- 1
Agree ownership with IT
- We confirm which system owns users and enrollments, especially if an SIS already feeds Canvas.
- Deliverables
- Ownership map
- Required scopes list
- 2
Build against a test instance
- We develop against a Canvas test or beta environment and test enrollments by SIS ID.
- Deliverables
- Integration code
- Test results
- 3
Launch with monitoring
- We deploy, run a reconciliation pass and hand over a runbook.
- Deliverables
- Reconciliation report
- Runbook

FAQ
Canvas Questions
Something we haven't covered? The assistant answers from this page and can book an engineer.
Ask the assistant
Our institution already has an SIS feeding Canvas. Can WordPress still enroll learners?
Yes, but ownership must be clear. We usually route non-credit or continuing-ed enrollments through WordPress and leave credit enrollments with the SIS, using separate sub-accounts or terms to keep them apart.
Do we need Canvas admin access to integrate?
Your Canvas administrator needs to issue a developer key and grant an integration user the right permissions. We specify exactly what is required.
Can paid WooCommerce courses enroll learners in Canvas?
Yes. A paid order queues an enrollment by SIS ID, and refunds or cancellations conclude or delete the enrollment according to your records policy.
Can you customize Canvas itself?
Within what Canvas permits, yes: LTI tools, theme files uploaded by the institution and admin-level configuration. See our Canvas customization page for more.
How do you avoid hitting Canvas API limits?
Queued jobs throttle based on the rate-limit headers Canvas returns, and large loads go through SIS imports instead of individual calls.

- Tell the assistant what's breakingYour LMS, the plugins involved and what learners or admins see. Ask it anything about the integration first if you like.
- Confirm your work emailA one-time code proves the address. Never share passwords, API keys or LMS admin logins in chat.
- Pick a timeChoose an open slot for your technical assessment. An engineer reviews your setup before the call.

Hi — I can help with Canvas WordPress Integration. What's happening between your WordPress site and your LMS?
Orders complete in WooCommerce, but some learners never get enrolled.
That's usually the order-to-enrollment hand-off — a missed webhook or a duplicate account. Let's book a technical assessment; I'll need your name and work email.
